Lamorne Morris Dives Into The No-Nonsense Attitude Of His Character Ahead Of His ‘Fargo’ Debut

It’s one thing to be able to showcase your talent for the world to see, but doing so for a project that you admire is a different feeling. For Lamorne Morris, this is what being a part of Fargo’s fifth season is all about.

“I saw the movie years ago, and I knew it was going to be a series,” Morris told Blavity’s Shadow and Act when speaking about the FX show. “I had a list of different movies and shows that I hadn’t seen, and I was just going through the list. When Fargo came up, I finished seasons 1 and 2, and then I got an offer, or I got a meeting set to possibly be in the show, I just thought, ‘Well, this makes sense because it’s one of the best shows I’ve ever seen… if not the best. It’s right up there with some of my favorites.”

Morris, who portrays a North Dakota deputy named Witt Farr, said his character is a “no-nonsense type of guy.”

“He’s the definition of Minnesota nice, but there’s something happening internally that he’s keeping to himself,” Morris added.

The Woke star also broke down where viewers meet his character versus where they’ll be left with him by the end.

“We find him as someone who just wants to be left alone,” Morris shared. “There’s some pain that he’s dealing with, which most of us are, in this quiet town. He feels like, ‘Oh, I can just do my job and go home.’ He lives alone, and it’s business as usual. Everything is fine.”

He continued, “But where we leave him, he feels a little bit more activated. Even though the threat that’s in front of him isn’t one of those particular crime threats, meaning Fargo’s past. There’s like this big crime that happens, and they’re trying to figure it out.”

In the case of Morris’ character, he’s dealing with more of a domestic threat after stepping in to help a woman who has been abused and kidnapped.

“For him, he can’t stay quiet. He knows that he’s one person up against a militia of folks,” Morris recalled. “He’s a Black dude up against a racist militia of folks and in this town where he is very much the minority.”

When it comes to lessons learned while portraying Witt Farr, Morris said the biggest takeaway for him has been practicing patience, but for others, it is important to note that when life is happening all around you, sometimes it’s best to roll with the punches.

“I think there’s a lot of lessons to be taken from this season in particular,” Morris confessed. “One is that you have to go through it, you know what I mean? If there’s something going on in your life, you have to go through the fire. You can’t skate around it. You can’t sugarcoat things at times. If there’s a problem that you are facing in your life, you have to face it head-on.”

Season 5 of Fargo premieres on Hulu on Tuesday.
