Land bank hires local company for demolition project in Frazeysburg

ZANESVILLE − Flecto Construction of Zanesville has been contracted to demolish several deteriorating buildings in Frazeysburg.

Bidding for the project ended last week, and the commissioners and land bank have awarded the project to Flecto for $91,268. Eight companies bid on the project with four of them being local to Muskingum County. The buildings to be torn down are 15 and 18 Basin St. and 47- 59 W. Second St. Originally, the buildings served as stores and apartment complexes built from scrap.

The identified structures suffer from severe structural issues including caving roofs and floors and the interiors left in complete disrepair, rendering them unfit for use according to Andy Roberts, executive director for the Muskingum County Land Reutilization Corporation. As a precautionary measure, a consultant for an asbestos check will be hired before beginning any demolition.

The Ohio Department of Development allocated $585,000 to the city for the demolition of Munson Elementary School, which is now being turned into housing. With a balance of $125,000 left over from the grant, the land bank will be using that money for the demolition project, including the asbestos assessment.

Additionally, the land bank has applied for $3.86 million dollars in grant money from the Department of Development once again for projects next year.

Flecto has been hired to work on previous construction projects such as the Dog Pound Adoption Center. Once the project begins the anticipated completion date is tentatively set for mid-January. As of now, no plans have been set for future use of the cleared land.
