Land of Lincoln CEO students prepare for 'Winter Fest'

Students enrolled in the Land of Lincoln CEO program understand the frustration of being stuck inside during winter. The students agreed one way to avoid the winter blues is having an interactive activity that offers an afternoon of fun for both the young and old.

The 2022 CEO students are offering “Winter Fest” running from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29 at the Lincoln Park District, 1400 Railer Way, in Lincoln.

Alex Schmidt, a CEO student and spokesperson for the event, said he hopes to see many faces at the event.

“There will be bouncy houses, an obstacle course, vendors and Nuthatch Hill BBQ selling their wonderful barbecue. Our event offers fun and food and we would like to see everyone that afternoon,” said Schmidt who is a junior at Lincoln Community High School.

Faith Sanders, a junior from Hartsburg-Emden, said the group’s goal was to unite the community.

“We wanted something that was interactive for families and kids. Our marketing tool is ‘Escape the cold, make warm memories’ and we chose that because we want the public to remember us as the ones bringing everyone together,” said Sanders.

Lisa Kuhlman, facilitator of the Land of Lincoln CEO program said she feels students have embraced the concept and are learning while doing.

“This is a small taste of what it would be like for them to launch their own individual businesses soon. They are getting experience and help from their peers and mentors. They have a lot of exposure to entrepreneurial advice from sponsors, mentors and guest speakers. They are well prepared for something they will be expected to do,” said Kuhlman.

Kuhlman said they are taking all precautions to keep everyone safe while also offering a family focused event.

“The feedback they have received so far is people are eager to get out and start getting back into community events. They are anticipating a good crowd,” she continued.

Seth Goodman, owner of ME Realty who serves as a mentor for Peyton Johnson, a junior at LCHS, thinks highly of the CEO program.

“It’s really quite awesome in my opinion. When I was their age I wish there was a program like this. I had mentors outside of school that helped me get to where I am today. To be a small fraction of what may help them to become successful in the future is awesome,” said Goodman.

Johnson, who plans to make catfish rigs as his CEO project, said he is grateful for the input he has received from his mentor.

“It’s a really good experience to have someone who owns their own business. He can give me helpful tips and tricks on whatever we are doing in class or by working on an event like Winter Fest,” said Johnson.

A CEO trade show which highlights all of the student businesses is scheduled in the spring.
