Land O’ Lakes High School to open Wednesday after ‘suspicious substance’ closed it Tuesday

Land O’ Lakes High School was closed Tuesday after a “report of a suspicious substance” that was found in the mail at the school, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office reported on social media.

The school district said the school will be open on Wednesday.

In a post just before 9 a.m., the sheriff’s office said “the substance is isolated in one non-student area of the school and was determined to be non-hazardous in nature.”

“Out of an abundance of caution, Land O’ Lakes High School is closing for the day,” the post states. “No additional information is available at this time as the investigation continues. An update will be provided when available.”

Corey Dierdorff, a spokesperson for the school district, said students were sent home so the sheriff’s office could complete its investigation.

“The important thing is that the substance was non-toxic and no students were ever in danger,” Dierdorff said.

Times staff writer Marlene Sokol contributed to this report.
