Landmarks, town history at Walktober event in Coventry

Nov. 4—COVENTRY — Those who participate in the Walktober event in Coventry on Saturday will get to see and learn more about many of the town's historic landmarks.

The event is free to attend and is organized by The Last Green Valley. The Last Green Valley is two things: a 35-town National Heritage Corridor in Eastern Connecticut and south-central Massachusetts and a nonprofit organization that cares for its National Heritage Corridor.

The Last Green Valley organizes Walktober events in towns throughout the National Heritage Corridor to get people out and about and enjoying what each town has to offer.

The event is hosted by the Coventry Historical Society and led by Town Historian John Holmy.

The walk will take participants along Coventry's historic Depot Road, which was one of the major routes in and out of town.

Those attending the walk will also be able to view the ruins of the Rawitzer Mill and see an old railroad station.

Participants in the walk will also be able to learn about the impact Mill Brook had on Coventry Village. During the 19th Century it was one of the most vital small mill districts in New England.

Those participating in the Walktober event will see barrel vault arches from an old trolley line and will be able to get a view of the Willimantic River.

The event will take place from 11 a. m. to 1 p. m. on Saturday. Participants should meet at Mill Pond Park, which is located on Depot Road near the intersection with Old Eagleville Road in Coventry. Dogs are welcome at this event as long as they are kept on a leash.

Fran Kefalas, assistant director for The Last Green Valley, said that the Coventry Historical Society has participated in the Walktober event for many years. She said that those who attend the event will learn a lot about the history of Coventry.

"They do such a nice job of sharing that history that's hidden from most of us in Coventry," Kefalas said.

The rain date for this event will take place Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
