Lane County coronavirus update, March 11: 30 new cases; 10 deaths in a week

Lane County Public Health reported 30 confirmed or presumptive new cases of COVID-19 and one new death on Friday, raising the countywide case count to 56,703 and the death count to 482. There have been 10 new deaths in the past week.

There were 207 county residents considered infectious Thursday, an 8% drop from Wednesday's 481. Lane County Public Health had no new figure Friday.

The number of county residents reported hospitalized Friday was 43, up 10% from Thursday's 39, with six in intensive care and two on a ventilator, unchanged from Wednesday. Of the 43 people hospitalized, 60.5%, or 26, are not fully vaccinated.

As of Thursday, 275,346 people in Lane County, 72.2% of the total population, had received first or second vaccine doses with 659,132 first and second doses administered in Lane County, according to the Oregon Health Authority.

On Saturday, the state's mask requirements will be lifted for most indoor spaces. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the Transportation Security Administration's mask mandate, which requires travelers to mask up on airplanes, trains, buses and in airports and train stations, will be extended through April 18. This includes passengers of Lane Transit District.

A potential new COVID-19 variant, a combination of the delta and omicron variants – you can call it "deltacron" – has been identified.

The World Health Organization said Wednesday that the new COVID-19 combination has been detected in France, the Netherlands and Denmark. It's also been found in the U.S., according to a new report soon to be published on research site MedRxiv, and viewed by USA TODAY.

The San Mateo, California-headquartered lab Helix, which works with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to track COVID-19, sequenced 29,719 positive COVID-19 samples collected Nov. 22 to Feb. 13 from across the U.S., according to the research team, which included the University of Washington Medical Center and testing company Thermo Fisher Scientific.
