Update: Motorcyclist dead after wrong-way crash on I-5 early Tuesday morning

A motorcyclist heading the wrong way on I-5 was killed after colliding with an oncoming car.

The collision occurred Tuesday around 4:06 a.m. on Interstate 5, just south of Lake Samish Road near milepost 240 in Whatcom County. All northbound lanes of traffic were blocked for about three hours.

The motorcyclist, a 38-year-old man from Monroe, Washington, was airlifted to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to a social media post from Washington State Patrol public information officer Kelsey Harding.

The motorcyclist was heading south in the northbound farthest left lane, or fast lane, Harding told The Bellingham Herald.

His name was not immediately released.

The driver of the other vehicle, 25-year-old Julio C Jimenez from Mount Vernon, was transported to Skagit Valley Hospital. Details about his injuries are unknown.

A detour route through Bow Hill Road was established at the time. The traffic backup reached as far south as Burlington, according to a WSDOT traffic map.

The roadway has been cleared and all lanes were reopened about 7 a.m.
