Feb. 23—A fatal crash involving a pedestrian closed southbound lanes of Interstate 5 south of 179th Street near Ridgefield for nearly four hours this morning.

Southbound traffic lanes were reopened shortly after 7 a.m., according to views from traffic cameras and the Washington State Department of Transportation, but a back-up that extended as far north as the Pioneer Street interchange in Ridgefield was slow to clear.

The crash was reported shortly after 3 a.m. and has caused a miles-long backup as traffic was diverted off the freeway during the investigation.

A social media post from the Washington State Patrol confirmed the crash was fatal.

The Washington State Department of Transportation advised motorists to take an alternative route if possible or be prepared for long delays.

Southbound traffic was diverted off the freeway at 179th Street to avoid the crash scene.
