Fire near Sikh temple guts building, causes propane tanks to explode

A fire is under investigation after “large explosions” were reported near a Sacramento County Sikh temple on Monday afternoon, according to Sacramento Metro Fire.

Metro Fire said crews arrived to a working fire around 3:30 p.m. at a stand-alone building in front of a Sikh temple on the 7600 block of Bradshaw Road. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatch to the scene after receiving reports of large explosions.

The Gurdwara Sacramento Sikh Society is near the intersection of Bradshaw and Gerber roads.

After initial crews reported they heard loud explosions, Metro Fire said the explosions came from multiple large 50-gallon propone tanks that were stored against the building in the path of the fire.

Explosions from the tanks traveled at least 50 feet high and the fire burned into the attic space, causing a partial collapse of the roof, Metro Fire said.

Parker Wilbourn with Metro Fire told FOX40 the cause of the initial fire is still under investigation.

The temple didn’t sustain any damage from the nearby fire, Metro Fire said.

“I know the Sikh community is on edge right now when we first heard of the reports of the explosion, but this is where you want to have a tempered response and make sure all of the investigators and first responders have an opportunity to do the investigation,” Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen, who spoke on behalf of the the Sikh temple, told FOX40.

The area of the Sikh temple is in the Vineyard community of Sacramento County, which is located north of Elk Grove and about six miles east of Highway 99.
