Large fire hits recycling facility in Edinburgh

EDINBURGH, Ind. — A large fire broke out Friday evening at a recycling facility in Edinburgh, Indiana.

According to the Edinburgh Police Department, police and fire crews were dispatched to the Group Metal Recycling Facility in the 100 block of North Holland Street at around 5:35 p.m. Friday evening.

Crews found the building engulfed in flames when they arrived on scene. Police say multiple agencies were dispatched to assist the Edinburgh Fire Department due to the nature of the fire.

According to a Facebook post from Edinburgh Fire and Rescue, the roof of the building collapsed minutes after crews arrived at the scene. Fire personnel also set up hand lines when they arrived at the scene to protect areas to the south and west of the blaze.

It took fire crews approximately two hours to get the fire under control due to the business having a lot of vehicle parts, oil and propane tanks throughout the building.

Police say no one was injured in the fire, and no one was inside the business at the time of the fire. Edinburgh Fire and Rescue officials reported that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management was called to the scene to test the water run off from the fire. According to Edinburgh Fire and Rescue’s Facebook post, IDEM determined “everything is in acceptable limits” when it comes to water run off.

Police say due to the severity of the fire, the building is a total loss. Edinburgh Fire and Rescue reported that an excavator was used during the incident to remove debris and heavy items from the scene of the fire and help crews access any remaining hot spots.

The fire is currently under investigation. If you have information about this fire, you are asked to call Chief Doyne Little at 812-526-3500 or email dlittle@edinburgh.in.us.

Edinburgh Fire and Rescue has indicated that the state fire marshal’s office is also investigating the fire. A representative from the Indiana Fire Marshal’s Office will continue to try to determine the cause of the fire on Monday.

“We would like to thank all of our mutual aid companies for their hard work on this fire,” Edinburgh Fire and Rescue’s Facebook post read. “We also want to thank our town utility departments for all that they did from the electric department securing the electric, the street department for bringing barricades and lighting to the scene and the water department for helping determine access to different water mains.

“We want to thank Robertson Paving. We requested they assist with an excavator so we could move debris and heavy items inside of the building to access fires and hotspots we couldn’t get to. Thank you to the Edinburgh Police Department for all of their assistance from blocking roads, crowd control, interviewing witnesses and many other things. Thank you to all of the citizens that brought in drinks and food to the crews!”
