Large landslide south of Wrangell closes highway, draws search and rescue team
Nov. 21—A large landslide south of Wrangell in Southeast Alaska late Monday closed the Zimovia Highway at 11 Mile and drew a multi-agency emergency response, including the local search and rescue team, the city said in a Facebook post.
It was not immediately known whether people in homes or vehicles were caught in the slide.
"A large-scale search and rescue effort cannot be done at this time as the site is extremely hazardous and unstable," officials said in the 3:45 a.m. post.
KSTK public radio in Wrangell reported the slide occurred about 9 p.m. and knocked out power to some areas.
