Firefighters watch for wildfire flare-ups in Greenwood, Arkansas

The last time there was significant rainfall in Greenwood was from a flood in June.

On Tuesday night, July 12, the threat to homes came from wildfire.

Hot, dry weather has increased fire danger. Residents were on high alert Tuesday night as a large fire spread in the wind toward homes.

Firefighting crews from multiple agencies brought a large wildfire near Greenwood that threatened homes under control at about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday. There were no reports of property damage or injury.

Multiple agencies from the area responded to the call, and many were on standby to protect homes near Maple and Spruce Streets in Greenwood.

Greenwood Mayor Doug Kinslow said that high winds were providing "havoc" for the firefighters, but when the evening wind slowed, it allowed crews to get the fire about 75 to 80% contained by 7 p.m.

Local law enforcement warned residents from several homes along Hilltop Drive in Greenwood to evacuate, and crews hosed down many houses.

Firefighters battled flames in high temperatures in the upper 90s.

Greenwood Battalion Chief Lance Terry said the fire appeared to have started during training exercises at Fort Chaffee. It burned about 20 acres. Wednesday morning the fire was 99% contained.

Crews continued to watch for any possible flare-ups from hotspots as temperatures increased during the day.

Terry said the Tuesday fire started about the same place as a wildfire in 2011.

"It was almost a repeat," Terry said.

Fort Chaffee Fire Department crews alerted Greenwood in time to set up a firebreak to stop the fire from reaching homes, Terry said.

Greenwood resident Paul Van Lare said the fire spread near Norwood Drive about 6:15 p.m.
