1 killed in glider plane crash northwest of Wellington Thursday afternoon

Update, Sept. 12: The person killed in the glider crash has been identified as David Kinsell, 71, of Windsor. His death was ruled an accident, and he died from multiple blunt force injuries, according to the Larimer County Coroner's Office.

Original: A person was killed in a glider plane crash northwest of Wellington on Thursday afternoon.

Responders from the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, Wellington Fire Protection District and UCHealth were dispatched to the crash located on private property in the Rawhide Flats area, south of Soapstone Prairie Natural Area, about 1:45 p.m.

Investigators arrived on scene to find a fixed-wing, single-seat glider with one adult occupant, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A Coloradoan journalist who went to the scene observed a glider plane in the field with damage to the front of the plane and its wing.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating what factors contributed to the crash, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. The Larimer County Coroner's Office will release the person's name as well as their cause and manner of death at a later time.
