Las Cruces community leader, storyteller celebrates 100th birthday

LAS CRUCES - Florence Hamilton, former secretary of the Doña Ana County NAACP and member of Storytellers of Las Cruces, celebrated her 100th birthday Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022, in Las Cruces.

When asked about her longevity, Hamilton said, "The Good Lord must have lost my tag that said, 'call me.'"

Hamilton, a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter in El Paso, met with her sorority sisters, friends and family in her birthday celebration.

"Our sorority is about community service, which she is a big advocate," said Cathy Davidson, a sister in Alpha Kappa Alpha, billed as the first intercollegiate historically Black sorority. "She supports advocacy and she supports family."
