LAS CRUCES - Residents of Las Cruces and Sunland Park were asked to vote on a total of seven bond issues in this year's midterm election. Las Cruces voters were presented with four individual questions, while voters residents of Sunland Park faced three.

Las Cruces voters support all four municipal bonds

The passage of all four bond issues will not raise property taxes from levels last approved by voters in 2018. That year, voters approved a $35.6 million slate of GO bond projects. To keep property taxes at the levels established at that time, city voters could approve a maximum of $23 million in new bond projects. As a result, city councilors in August approved only the $23 million in bonds for this year's election.

The four bond issues city council authorized this year were:

  • $10 million to acquire, plan, design, construct, and equip a new fire station north of US Highway 70 and east of Interstate 25. As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, unofficial results indicated this bond would pass with 76% support.

  • $5 million to continue to expand the East Mesa Public Recreation Complex, which is currently under construction. As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, unofficial results indicated this bond had 63% support.

  • $6 million to provide resources to plan, design, construct, acquire, and preserve housing affordable for low- to moderate-income households, including acquisition of necessary land, utilizing the city’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund. As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, unofficial results indicated this bond would be approved with 66% support.

  • $2 million to renovate and improve existing parks and recreational facilities. As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, unofficial results indicated this bond would pass with 74% support.

Sunland Park residents approve $12 million slate

Voters in Sunland Park saw three bond questions on their ballots — a slate totaling $12 million. They included:

  • $4 million for the design and construction of a new public safety complex, the purchase of a new fire ladder truck and other necessary city vehicles. As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, unofficial results indicated this bond would pass with 77% support.

  • $4 million for the construction of a regional recreation center, upgrades to current parks and the city library and the construction of a second library. As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, unofficial results indicated this bond would be approved with 71% support.

  • $4 million for work on existing roads, the new construction of roadways and wastewater infrastructure. As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, unofficial results indicated this bond had 83% support.

All results remain unofficial until after their certification by the state canvass board later in November.
