5 people shot, 4 dead including 2 children in murder-suicide in northwest Las Vegas valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Las Vegas police said multiple people, including two children, were shot and killed in an apartment in the northwest valley Monday morning in an apparent murder-suicide.

Police were called to the 7500 block of Oso Blanca Road near Durango Drive and Veterans Memorial Highway at around 10:03 a.m., according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

According to Lieutenant Robert Price from the LVMPD, a man called 911 after he went to the apartment complex to check on his brother. When he went into the apartment, he found several people inside that were shot.

Arriving officers from the Northwest area command found five people with gunshot wounds, a man, an older woman, and three children under the age of 14.

In a briefing Monday, Lt. Price said that one of the children was found “clinging to life” and medical took them to a local hospital.

The other two children, the woman, and the man were pronounced dead on the scene.

According to Lt. Price, preliminary details lead police to believe the shooting was a murder-suicide.

8 News Now Investigators sources confirmed the shooter’s name was Marvin Ray Patterson.

Price said at some point in time during the early morning hours, Patterson shot the children, the woman, and himself.

Police said they didn’t know the exact relationship between Patterson and the victims, but they said there was “some sort of tie.”

Lt. Price said Patterson was on house arrest. The 8 News Now Investigators confirmed that Patterson was accused of sex crimes against children and was wearing an ankle monitor.

In the briefing, Price said called the event “sad and tragic” and said that during the holidays, people will often get depressed or suicidal.

“There are people out there who are willing to talk to you,” Price said. “There are hotlines, there are friends, family.”

Law enforcement taped off the Loreto & Palacio Apartments Monday afternoon, as police cruisers littered the complex’s parking lot. Investigators described the scene as contained, meaning that all police activity related to the shooting was limited to the inside of the complex.

Lt. Price said no one had reported hearing gunshots to the police.

Across from the complex sits Sandra Lee Thompson Middle School. School staff said the campus was self-imposing a soft lockdown, although investigators told them that the school was in no danger.

Police are asking people to avoid the area.
