Las Vegas police arrest woman in ‘random’ shooting that left 1 dead at west valley apartment complex

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A woman was arrested after what was described as a “random” shooting that left one man dead at an apartment complex in the west valley, according to police.

It happened on Tuesday shortly after 4 p.m. in the 3600 block of South Fort Apache Road near Twain Avenue, according to Las Vegas Metro police.

When officers arrived they located a man in his 40s who had been shot inside a carpet cleaning company van, near the entrance of the complex.

Police attempted to provide medical aid until he was taken to a nearby hospital. The man was later pronounced dead from his injuries.

Witnesses at the scene provided officers with an initial suspect description of a man with facial and neck tattoos wearing dark clothing and carrying bags. Witnesses told police the man was seen leaving the front entrance of the apartment complex. Patrol officers were then able to locate the suspect in a nearby neighborhood. However, when police found the suspect she was identified as a woman in her 20s. The woman was then taken into custody by officers.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s preliminary investigation indicated that the female suspect was inside the complex checking car doors to see if they were unlocked, police said. Several people notified the apartment leasing manager who then asked maintenance workers to go and search for the reported suspect and get them off the property.

While the suspect was being located, two men inside a carpet cleaning company van were parked at the complex conducting a cleaning service. Police then stated that the female suspect quickly approached the van and pulled out her gun and shot the driver of the van.

“Right now we have no indication at all that our victim had any interaction with the suspect prior to that occurring. Our suspect then fled out of the gate,” Las Vegas Metro Homicide Lt. Jason Johansson told 8 News Now. “They were here just doing their job doing an estimate to clean someone’s carpet sitting in their van.”

Police said they would continue to investigate witnesses throughout the night. The female suspect was not identified on Tuesday night but police told 8 News Now she had a criminal history.

“This appears to be a random shooting of a completely innocent hardworking human being who was here at work and was shot and killed while doing their job,” Johansson added.

Those with information on the shooting can call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
