Las Vegas shelter reports 160+ dogs show signs of canine influenza, 17 confirmed cases

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – This week the Animal Foundation reported that more than 100 dogs at the shelter have shown signs of canine influenza.

A total of 164 dogs at the shelter showed signs of canine influenza on Wednesday which was one less than the day before. 17 dogs have tested positive for the virus at the shelter.

As the Animal Foundation staff awaits additional test results to return, the situation serves as a reminder for dog owners to be aware of the signs of influenza.

Canine Influenza symptoms

  • Coughing

  • Lethargy

  • Sneezing

  • Reduced appetite

  • Ocular discharge

  • Fever

The shelter took in nearly 90 animals on Tuesday and among them, 30 dogs arrived from two confiscation cases. Another case involved 19 dogs, including a few nursing mothers. The second case involved 11 dogs, according to the Animal Foundation.

In the past 10 days, more than 200 dogs and 90 cats have left for foster homes, according to the Animal Foundation.
