Las Vegas Strip’s New Year's Eve fireworks show canceled
LAS VEGAS – For anyone planning New Year’s Eve on the Las Vegas Strip, something will be missing this year.
The fireworks show has been canceled, reports the Reno Gazette Journal, which is a part of the USA TODAY Network.
In a statement Thursday, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority announced The Strip’s world-renowned pyrotechnics display will not ring in 2021.
“Las Vegas has always been a bucket list New Year’s Eve destination,” LVCVA CEO Steve Hill said in a statement. “But as we have said throughout the year, the safety and security of our guests and employees is our top priority, and with that in mind, we will not have a fireworks show on December 31st.”
But tourists should stay tuned, Hill said.
“We have have some special things planned to welcome 2021 with the hope and promise it brings,” he said.
Las Vegas has long been a pick for visitors plotting New Year's getaways, but the COVID-19 pandemic has essentially transformed it from a global destination to a regional gambling hub dependent on "drive-in" business.
Casinos downsized, operating hours atrophied – and the fireworks have left.
In 2019, tourism officials expected 318,000 people to travel to Las Vegas for the holiday and nearly all the city’s more than 147,000 hotel rooms to be booked.
