Last day of class for BPS students as DESE leaders gear up for big vote
Monday is the last day of class for Boston Public Schools.
As kids get ready to enjoy their summer, school leaders are getting ready to vote on whether the district will go into receivership.
State education commissioner Jeffrey Riley has said he doesn’t want to the district to go into receivership, but he will be recommending that DESE designate BPS as an underperforming district.
This comes after weeks of back and forth discussions between school leaders, Mayor Michelle Wu and state education regulators. They’re trying to come up with a plan to improve on several issues that were outlined in a 188-page report last month.
In a memo that Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley wrote, he said the city and state have been unable to reach an agreement on the best way to move forward.
The commissioner said if the board were to designate BPS as an underperforming district, he would appoint a leader to monitor site visits to the district. He also would require the district to create an improvement plan. Riley said once the department approves this plan, the board would make up to $10 million available over three years.
The teachers union is in support of Mayor Wu coming up with a plan to help improve the schools. Even if the board votes to classify BPS as underperforming, it doesn’t completely shut out the possibility of the school going into receivership in the future if it doesn’t fix the problems.
The board is set to meet Tuesday at 9 a.m.
