The Gayle Karch Cook Center for Public Arts and Humanities is the newest full member of Bloomington's treasured Gallery Walk, and it's the first time an Indiana University gallery has been part of the monthly gala. (The Cook Center will show mostly IU students and IU visiting artists.)

This first-Fridays event includes the Arts Mile, which is a walkable route, although many pick just a few galleries in order to linger and perhaps dine nearby afterward.

“Emperor Penguins of Snow Hill Island, Antarctica," an exhibit by wildlife photographer Dee Ann Pederson, opens Friday at FAR Center for Contemporary Arts.

"Pictura Gallery at FAR Center for Contemporary Arts has a great holiday exhibit going up on Gallery Walk evening, in the 505 Theater space," said Martha Moore, the gallery's owner. It's called “Emperor Penguins of Snow Hill Island, Antarctica," and nationally recognized wildlife photographer Dee Ann Pederson will be there.

"We will showcase (Pederson's) Emmy award-winning film about her trip to Antarctica, as well as stunning photographs she took." At 7 p.m. Friday, Pederson and Professor Emeritus Jeffrey White will have a panel discussion about the emperor penguins and the effects of global warming on their ecosystem. The event is free and open to the public.

Photographer Karen Navarro's exhibition “The Constructed Self” will be on display in Pictura Gallery that evening as well.

From 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, children will enjoy “Penguin Photo Workshop,” with Pederson, where they'll learn about the penguins and create penguin holiday cards.

The galleries on the walk feature a variety of giftable arts and crafts, such as pottery, jewelry, paintings, photographs, sculpture, textiles, glass works, limestone works, scarves, bags and children’s items.

"This year is different because we have more galleries, and everyone is OPEN," Moore said.

Many galleries will offer some food and drink options on their premises, and most downtown restaurants are open Friday evenings and close to the Arts Mile.
