The Last Thing He Told Me's creators have revealed the truth behind Owen's last words to Hannah in the mystery thriller series from Apple TV+.

Adapted from the 2021 book by Laura Dave, the seven-part series stars Jennifer Garner alongside Game of Thrones' Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Hannah Hall and Owen Michaels respectively.

At the end of the series, which follows Hannah as she searches for her missing husband, Owen turns up at an art gallery where Hannah is working and whispers something to his wife.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, screenwriter Josh Singer and author Dave explained exactly what Owen whispered to Hannah and the meaning behind it.

"He said: 'The could-have-been boys still love you.' Which is a reference to… you know," said Dave, before revealing that Owen's last words were a callback to a previous scene.

Earlier in the series, a flashback scene saw Hannah using the term 'could-have-been boys' to reference the men of her past, a term that Singer said was the original name of the book.

"Interestingly, when Laura first wrote the book, it was called The Could-Have-Been Boys, and I always loved that title," Singer said. "In the flashback in Malibu in episode two, they talk about the could-have-been boys. You know, the boys that could have been. And what you don't have the benefit of, which our viewers will, is, in the recap, we will recap that section.

Meanwhile, Singer and Dave opened up about the likelihood of a second series, saying: "It's possible."
