Transformers star Isabela Merced is joining the cast of The Last of Us for season two.

According to Deadline, Isabela has been cast in the HBO series as Dina, a major character from the video game who becomes a romantic interest for Ellie (Bella Ramsey).

She joins a string of major castings for the second season of The Last of Us, including No One Will Save You's Kaitlyn Dever as the vengeful soldier Abby and Beef's Young Mazino as Dina's one-time boyfriend Jesse.

Producers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have said in a statement: "Dina is warm, brilliant, wild, funny, moral, dangerous and instantly lovable. You can search forever for an actor who effortlessly embodies all of those things, or you can find Isabela Merced right away. We couldn't be prouder to have her join our family."

Isabela also shared the news of her Last of Us casting on her Instagram account, writing: "This is very crazy/cool!!".

Merced recently joined the cast of James Gunn's Superman: Legacy as the superhero Hawkgirl and will soon appear in the highly-anticipated Alien: Romulus.

She has previously played the young hero Izabella in Transformers: The Last Knight, plus she starred in Dora and the Lost City of Gold as the title character and appeared in the festive movie Let it Snow.

There had been some speculation that production on the new season of The Last of Us could be delayed due to Pedro Pascal's arm injury, but various outlets have suggested filming remains on schedule.

The Last of Us airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in the UK. A second season is currently in the works.
