Kansas City Chiefs LB Willie Gay Jr. got himself into some trouble on Wednesday evening.

Gay was arrested on one count of misdemeanor criminal damage in Johnson County, Kansas on Wednesday night. The arrest allegedly stems from a domestic dispute where Gay is accused of damaging a vacuum cleaner, door frame and more items. Gay missed the team’s second practice of the week as he awaited his Thursday afternoon arraignment.

According to a new report from the Kansas City Star, Gay has since appeared before a judge and pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor criminal damage charge. Gay is expected to be released from the Johnson County Detention Center this afternoon on his own recognizance, meaning he will not need to post any bond. He’ll be served with a protection order prohibiting him from contacting the mother of his 3-month-old son, who was involved in the incident on Wednesday night, at least until a civil judge hears the case.

Speaking to reporters following practice on Thursday, Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo deferred to Andy Reid on the situation.

“Yeah, I really don’t know,” Spagnuolo said Gay’s status for the divisional round. “I’m going to leave that up to Andy (Reid), I’m sure he’ll address it. But if this happened in the game and it was an injury, you know, today, we’d just operate that way. But we’ll see what happens.”

Tyrann Mathieu, who is a defensive leader for Kansas City, said he hadn’t yet spoken to Gay. He’s had his own off-field troubles in the past and will likely be someone who Gay relies on for guidance moving forward.

Reid will provide an update to reporters on Gay’s status following practice on Friday. Short of discipline from the league or another incident, expect Gay to return to practice and play against the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round.
