The latest in South Shore sports

Our latest South Shore high school boys lacrosse and baseball rankings were published this week.

On the baseball side, Milton is a clear No. 1. There's some other solid teams in the area, but the Wildcats are loaded. In the most recent MIAA tournament power ratings, Division 2 Milton had the third-highest rating in the state (coincidentally behind two Div. 3 schools in Austin Prep and Medfield).

On the boys lacrosse side, Hingham is a new No. 1 this week jumping BC High. Those teams are neck-and-neck in the Div. 1 MIAA tournament power rankings. Hingham has a huge Patriot League matchup with Duxbury (it's actually happening right as this email was sent, follow Chris McDaniel on Twitter for live updates).

Jason Snow was on hand for what could have been a bit of history on Tuesday when Whitman-Hanson baseball was at Marshfield. W-H coach Pat Cronin was sitting on 499 career wins entering play.

That's not the history that was made. Marshfield pitcher Owen Masterson spun a gem to earn his first varsity win on the mound for the Rams, who got back to .500 with the win.

“It means a lot," Masterson said. "This is our first time winning two in a row this season and also my first varsity win, so just coming out here and seeing the work we put in pay off, it’s awesome.”

The Panthers lost on Wednesday to Scituate, so Cronin is still at win No. 499. W-H is at Plymouth North on Friday and hosts Hingham on Monday.
