Laurel school board approves redistricting of board members territory

Oct. 25—Redistricting to balance the population for equal representation is underway and school board districts are no exception.

Laurel County Clerk Tony Brown and Election Officer Brandon Kilburn presented their redistricting proposal to members of the Laurel County school board on Monday night, with unanimous approval.

Last year, the areas for state legislators were realigned, dividing Laurel County into six legislative districts. That same policy must be followed at all levels of voters, including the new areas for school board members. Magisterial districts have already been realigned. Brown explained that the Clerk's office and PVA had maps of the changes that will go into effect on Nov. 8 — the day after this year's general election that includes the state offices such as Governor, Attorney General, Treasurer, and State Auditor.

Interim Superintendent Denise Griebel also honored the North and South Middle school girls basketball teams for their outstanding season. The 7th grade SLMS team took the KBC State Championship title with a 28-0 record. Last year the team won the 6th grade championship and coach Amy Jones warned the 8th grade coach to "look out next year."

The North Laurel Middle School 6th grade ended their season with a 30-1 record, with Coach Melissa Caudill saying, "That 1 still stings." The team won the 6th grade KBC State Championship.

Board members also approved two new policies — one for North Laurel High School Site Based Decision Making Council and another for and administrative policy.

Also approved were:

—Christian Appalachian Project Inc. (CAP) Operation Sharing Gift in Kind Recipient agreement with Hunter Hills Elementary, North Laurel High School and South Laurel Middle School.

—Re-create 1 Special Needs Assistant at Sublimity Elementary and 1 Preschool Special Needs Assistant at Wyan-Pine Grove Elementary.
