Lauren Calhoun honored for athletic and academic legacy at Ravenna High School

Lauren Calhoun, a 2019 graduate of Ravenna High School, was honored before the Ravens' football season opener on August 19 as the all-time leading scorer, boys or girls, in school history.

Calhoun, who finished her Ravenna career with 1,259 points, was honored not only for her success, but also to help mark the 50th anniversary of Title IX of the Education Amendments.

In 1972, Title IX was enacted to prohibit sex discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. More importantly, for athletics, this meant that female athletes were able to participate and compete in sports that for many previous to 1972 were not available.

Calhoun became the seventh Ravenna athlete to achieve 1,000 career points, joining Stan Trivelli, Andrea Parshall, Jordan Jones, DiAndrea Gibson and Deja Sanders.

Currently a member of the Wheeling University women's basketball team, Calhoun earned several awards during her high school career, including All-Ohio three times, first-team All-PTC as a senior, the Ravenna program's freshman of the year in 2016 and team MVP in 2019, and 2017 and 2018 team offensive player of the year.

Calhoun also was a four-time Academic Letter-winner and six-time Scholar-Athlete recipient. She finished ranked in the top 10 of her graduating class.

She was a member of the National Honor Society, Leadership Club, Principal Advisory Committee, and Business Professionals of America.

At Wheeling University, Calhoun led the team as a freshman with 534 points (19.4 ppg) and 318 rebounds (11.4 rpg). She is majoring in secondary education.
