LAUSD updates its COVID-19 isolation guidelines

The Los Angeles Unified School District announced Thursday that it will follow updated COVID-19 isolation guidelines in alignment with the California and Los Angeles County health departments.

Under the updated guidelines, students and staff who test positive for COVID-19 must stay home and away from others if they show symptoms or have a fever.

However, the isolation period would end if the individual has been fever-free without the help of medication or if symptoms are mild or are not present.

Previously, the recommended guidelines called for five days of isolation regardless of changes in symptoms.

The school district also shared that individuals who leave isolation before the 10-day mark from the first time they test positive will be required to wear a mask around others for 10 days.

Staff and students with COVID-19 who don’t show any symptoms won’t be required to isolate if they wear a well-fitting, high-quality mask when around others for 10 days after first testing positive, according to the school district.

The move comes after state health officials shortened the COVID-19 isolation guidelines for those who test positive.

“The reason for these changes is that we are now at a different point in time with reduced impacts from COVID-19 compared to prior years due to broad immunity from vaccination and/or natural infection, and readily available treatments for infected people,” a representative with the California Department of Public Health previously told KTLA in an email statement.

LAUSD says that it will continue to align with public health recommendations and educate schools and communities on how to stay safe from the virus.
