Law enforcement asks for public's help after explosion outside Alabama AG's office

State and federal law enforcement agencies are seeking the public’s help in an investigation into an explosive device placed outside the Alabama Attorney General’s office in downtown Montgomery.

On Saturday at about 3:42 a.m., an explosive device was detonated near the intersection of Washington Avenue and South Bainbridge Street, said Sgt. Jeremy Burkett, a spokesman for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. The office is across the street from the state Capitol building.

Special agents with ALEA's State Bureau of Investigation received notification of a suspicious package at about 8:19 a.m. on Monday and immediately responded to the scene and deemed the area safe. The suspicious package was confirmed as the device which was detonated on Saturday.

ALEA also released an image taken from video of a person of interest in the explosion.

ALEA did not comment on where the notification came from or what type of device it was.

ALEA along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation office in Mobile and the Alabama Attorney General’s Office, is asking for the public's assistance in identifying anyone of interest related to the incident.
