Law enforcement close Lodi streets after police find a pipe bomb during warrant search

Lodi police located a homemade pipe bomb during a warrant search Wednesday, and authorities closed city streets in the area to look for other explosives, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said.

“The road remains closed at South Church Street and Park Street until further notice,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post Thursday. “We ask that you please avoid the area.”

The Lodi Police Department in an update just before 3:20 p.m. Thursday said all units had cleared from the scene.

Police initiated their search at a residence in the 1000 block of South Church Street before noon. They found a pipe bomb in the suspect’s vehicle and called in an explosive ordnance disposal team to continue the search.

Sheriff’s officials said the residence was “packed with miscellaneous items,” making the search slow and difficult.

“Our EOD team is taking time and extra precautions to ensure they search everything properly and keep the communities’ safety their top priority,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

There is no threat to the community, police said.
