Law enforcement searching for abducted teen last seen in Gonzales

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help to find a 14-year-old girl last seen in Gonzales around 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Scarlett Smith is described as a white girl, 5 feet 4 inches, 187 pounds, with red hair and hazel eyes, according to a public notice from Texas DPS. She was last seen in the 15700 block of West U.S. 90 A wearing a red Nike hoodie.

Officials said the suspect is Barry Van Mersbergen, who may also go by the name Ben. Mersbergen, 22, is described as a white man, 6 feet 2 inches, 160 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Mersbergen was last seen driving a tan 2012 GMC Terrain with Texas license plate number 3RVWG, according to officials.

Officials believe the teen is in grave or immediate danger.
