Law & Order: SVU has reeled in Beverly D'Angelo to play Sonny Carisi's mum Serafina.

TVLine originally announced the National Lampoon star's casting, with D'Angelo set for a guest spot during season 23 in March.

In this particular episode, Sonny returns home for a special family dinner, which is where Serafina enters the equation. Will she meet her son's partner Amanda Rollins for the first time?

D'Angelo has actually appeared in the series before as a different character, first playing district prosecutor Rebecca Balthus way back in season 5 and reprising the role in season 9.

Elsewhere in the Law & Order-verse, creator Dick Wolf previously spoke of the flagship's revival series, its first since 2010.

"This will be season 21, so it's the same Law & Order everyone knows from the first 20 years," he said. "So there's really nothing to fix, we just want to continue telling great stories. Casting as always will be three cops and three DAs.

"We always approach storytelling the same way: Good writing, acting and production values, and give the viewers what they want. That's been our mantra from day one," he noted.

Sam Waterston will return to the revived Law & Order as Jack McCoy, reprising the iconic role he played for 16 seasons.

He'll be joined by the likes of Odelya Halevi as assistant DA Samantha Maroun, Jeffrey Donovan as Detective Frank Cosgrove, and Hugh Dancy as assistant DA Nathan Price when the new season premieres in late February.

Law & Order: SVU airs Thursdays on NBC in the US. The show airs on Sky Witness in the UK, with select episodes available on NOW.
