WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Questions are swirling in Washington after one Republican on the House Intelligence Committee warned Russian efforts in space could pose a future national security threat.

The White House is trying to tamp down fears and insists there is not an urgent threat.

Thursday, the president’s national security advisor held a classified briefing with lawmakers on Capitol Hill after House Intelligence Chair Mike Turner issued a cryptic warning about the threat.

White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby says while the matter is ‘concerning’ it is not an immediate threat.

“We are not talking about a weapon that can be used to attack human beings or cause physical destruction here on earth,” Kirby said.

In his message, posted to social media, Turner demanded that the White House declassify the information.  The Biden administration is not pleased with Turner’s tactics.

“Starting with private engagement rather than immediately publicizing the intelligence could be a much more effective approach,” Kirby added.

Turner’s comments are also facing push back from fellow Republicans in Congress.

In a letter to the Speaker of the House, Tennessee Congressman Andy Ogles said it was quote “done with reckless disregard of the implication consequences.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson said the serious matter is being handled internally for now.

“There’s no need for public alarm.  We are going to work together to address this matter as we do all sensitive matters that are classified,” Johnson said.

Turner’s warning was the top priority at a national security briefing with lawmakers scheduled for Thursday afternoon where the information will be shared with all members of Congress.
