WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-Md.) was joined by family members of victims who were killed in shootings to discuss solutions to gun violence on Friday.

“The focus that we took today in large part is based on the recognition that we have to continue with the struggle to move things forward in Congress, but there are other approaches we have to take,” Ivey said.

The representative from Maryland said leaders and family members discussed a range of solutions, including improving the education system in the U.S.

“We need to have better and stronger school systems, not just here, but across the country and we need to expand job opportunities.”

Dr. Tyreese McAllister, who lost her daughter to gun violence, was one of the many who participated in the discussion.

“There’s something that every single one of us can do to end gun violence, because at the end of the day, we are all at risk,” McAllister said.

Friday’s forum comes on the heels of recent deadly shootings, including a school shooting in Perry, Iowa earlier this month.
