Lawmakers introduce anti-vaping measures

(SOUNDBITE) CHICAGO MAYOR LORI LIGHTFOOT, SAYING:

“I am committing today, to lead an effort, to expand the current ban on sales of flavored e-cigarettes and other flavored tobacco products city wide.”

Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot on Monday joined a growing number of lawmakers taking action against vaping.

It comes amid nationwide alarm over an outbreak of a mysterious lung disease that has sickened hundreds and killed at least six people.

Indiana's John Porter, who used to vape THC, says he suffered two collapsed lungs.

(SOUNDBITE) JOHN PORTER, SAYING:

"Once it had completely collapsed when I would bend over, I would feel it hitting the inside of my chest."

Joining the fight against teenage vaping of cannabis and nicotine - California Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday announced an executive order.... Part of which allocates 20 million dollars for a youth awareness campaign.

Newsroom says, the stakes are high:

(SOUNDBITE) CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR GAVIN NEWSOM, SAYING:

“We’ve had at least one death and at least 63 instances of respiratory illness or ailments related to vaping products.”

(SOUNDBITE) NY GOVERNOR ANDREW CUOMO, SAYING:

“It is a real struggle. The addiction to nicotine is powerful.”

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday announced that his state’s health commissioner will formally ban all flavored e-cigarettes besides tobacco and menthol at an emergency meeting later this week.

(SOUNDBITE) NY GOVERNOR ANDREW CUOMO, SAYING:

“I’m not relying on the federal government. I don’t expect them to do anything responsibly, to act responsibility because I’ve never seen them act responsibly.”

Those tough words — coming after the Trump administration last week announced plans to remove all flavored e-cigarettes from store shelves.

TRUMP: “And we're going to have some very strong rules, regulations…”

On Monday, The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it had activated the agency’s emergency operations center to help find the specific cause of vaping-related injuries and deaths.
