Under the measure on its way to Gov. Ron DeSantis, female students’ eligibility for sports teams would be based on their “biological sex” on birth certificates issued “at or near the time of the student’s birth.”
- Now at 6:00. In an 11th hour move, Florida Republicans have revived and sent a proposal to Governor Ron DeSantis that would ban transgender girls and women from playing on public school teams intended for student athletes born as girls. A transgender student athlete would have to affirm her biological sex by supplying proof, such as a birth certificate.
Opponents say the ban targets young people who are struggling to cope with their gender identity. It also involves only a small group of transgender women and girls who may want to play sports. DeSantis is expected to sign the bill. The legislative session ends tomorrow.
