WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Lawmakers are sharing concerns about a serious new threat to U.S. national security. Top Biden administration officials have informed Congress of new intelligence about Russian plans to put a nuclear-capable weapon in space.

While lawmakers are saying there is no need for public alarm, the House Intelligence Committee chairman is asking President Joe Biden to declassify this information.

The threat is believed to be related to Russia’s plan to develop a space-based nuclear weapon designed to target U.S. satellites.

“I want to assure the American people there is no need for public alarm. We are going to work together to address this matter,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson

While lawmakers can’t comment much about classified information, they did say they are taking it seriously.

“There’s no imminent or urgent risk to any Americans and I think that’s the only message that I can and want to convey,” said Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.).

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner of Ohio first revealed the existence of a threat and called on President Biden to “declassify all information” relating to it.

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan provided no details but said he is working with lawmakers.

“You definitely are not going to find an unwillingness to do that when it’s in our national security interest to do so,” said Sullivan.

The White House national security team will be on Capitol Hill Thursday briefing lawmakers.
