Lawrence Township trustees

Tuesday meeting

KEY ACTION: Agreed to put a new road levy on the May 3 ballot and to hold two public hearings on a new vehicle registration permissive tax.

DISCUSSION: Upon receiving certification from the Stark County Auditor’s Office that a new five-year 1.4 mill road levy would raise $348,789 a year based on new property valuations, trustees agreed to ask voters for their approval at the ballot. Money from the levy will be collected in 2023. The new levy will replace one that has expired.

Trustees also scheduled two public hearings on a $5 vehicle registration permissive tax. Those hearings will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 22 and at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at the township administration building. Trustees must send a resolution or ordinance approving the tax to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles by July 1 for it to take effect the following registration year.

OTHER ACTION:

  • Accepted $6,000 made available under the OneOhio Opioid Settlement agreement. The money comes from a nationwide $5 billion settlement with Johnson & Johnson.

  • Agreed to continue an agreement with the Canal Fulton Lions Club to help maintain the recycling center near Township Hall. The agreement calls for $2,400 of a $2,500 grant from the Stark Tuscarawas Wayne Recycling District to go to the club. The township uses the remaining $100 to administer the grant.

  • Agreed to hire Gatchell Grant Resources for $950 to apply for a three-year Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant to hire and retain firefighters and emergency medical personnel.

  • Heard that updates are planned for the township’s website. Anyone who would like to be considered for the job may contact trustee Keith Blowers.

UP NEXT: Trustees will hold a work session with the North Lawrence Fire Department at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at the North Lawrence fire station to discuss fire service options. Trustees will meet in person at the township administration building and via Zoom at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 7.
