Lawrence Township trustees postpone chip and seal program

Lawrence Township trustees

Monday meeting

KEY ACTION: Postponed this year’s chip and seal program.

DISCUSSION: Road Superintendent Mark Sibila said Melway Paving Co., the contractor hired to chip and seal some of the township roads, recommended that the program be postponed until next year. The cold nights would reduce the set rate of the stone to 80%, said Sibila. Trustees agreed that it would be better to do the job in warmer weather when the conditions improve.

Trustee Michael Stevens added, “The township is not delaying it; Mother Nature is.” Plans are to do some spot paving this year to prepare for next year, said Sibila. The township will advertise for bids for the 2023 chip and seal program in the spring. Township roads are chipped and sealed every year.

OTHER ACTION:

  • Delayed approving a $2,280 tornado siren maintenance agreement with B&C Communications until trustees get further information about using solar power to operate the sirens. Once the agreement is approved, Canal Fulton will pay 40% of the cost ($912) and the township will cover the balance.

  • Approved the purchase of fitness equipment for the Fire Department totaling $18,847 from G&G Fitness Equipment and Rogue Fitness Equipment. The Assistance to Firefighters grant covers 95% of the cost with the township paying $942. A balance of $11,153 remains in the grant.

  • Heard that trick or treat will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 31 to coincide with Canal Fulton.

  • Scheduled a work session for 4 p.m. Nov. 21 at the township administration building to discuss 2023 appropriations.

UP NEXT: Will meet in person and via Zoom at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the township administration building. A meeting to discuss communications with the North Lawrence Fire Department will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the North Lawrence fire station.
