New laws set to take effect with start of 2023

This past November Governor Tom Wolf signed 66 bills into law. Many of those laws will take effect this week or this month.

Some new laws will affect drivers, starting with those who do not pay Turnpike tolls.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission now has more authority to crack down on thousands of drivers who do not pay. They will now be able to notify anyone who owes $250 or more or those who owe at least four tolls. Those notifications will begin this month.

Starting Monday, fentanyl test strips will no longer be considered drug paraphernalia.

This decision amends a previous law from 1972 and lawmakers hope it will help prevent deadly overdoses.

It will also be legal to posses a switchblade knife in Pennsylvania as of Monday. Switchblades were previously classified as offensive weapons.

Another law that takes effect this year is notifying victims of a break of data within 7 days if personally identifiable information is involved. The law applies to state agencies, contractors and local governments. Leaked information that would require action to be taken includes health insurance information and email addresses, passwords, or security questions to online accounts.

That law was the result of a Target 11 investigation after a company hired to conduct contact tracing for the state let personal information get leaked.
