LB Trevor Carter, 4-star recruit from Class of 2023, commits to Luke Fickell, Bearcats

Head coach Luke Fickell and the undefeated University of Cincinnati football team is in the midst of an unprecedented hot streak on the field. That school-record streak is also trickling over onto the recruiting trail.

The Bearcats on Tuesday landed a commitment from four-star linebacker Trevor Carter from Ironton High School in Southeast Ohio.

Carter is the third 2023 commitment for the Bearcats and the highest-rated defensive commitment in program history, according to 247Sports, edging 2022 Kettering Archbishop Alter High School defensive tackle Derrick Shepard.

"Obviously, I had some choices," Carter told The Enquirer. "I went and visited some places and just no one felt quite like it was in Cincinnati. When I went there to some games and went and visited this summer, it just felt like home more than anywhere else. I could definitely see myself playing there and that being home away from home for the next four years."

Carter, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound versatile athlete for the Fighting Tigers in Ironton, Ohio, chose Cincinnati over offers from Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State and others.

Carter said he'll likely play the hybrid sniper position for the "Blackcats" defense, the same role currently occupied by Ty Van Fossen and Deshawn Pace.

"I know they're recruiting me as mainly a linebacker, but I've talked to Coach Fick and Coach Tressel (UC defensive coordinator Mike Tressel) and they said they're going to use me as a safety-outside linebacker hybrid. So I think I'm going to get to fly around and make a lot of plays there. I think that's definitely going to be a lot of fun."

Carter joins offensive tackle AJ Salley (Miamisburg, Ohio) and athlete Jason Hewlett (Youngstown, Ohio) on the list of 2023 commitments for the Bearcats.

"We're going to keep building this 2023 class," Carter said. "At the moment, we have three hard commits. But we're going to be working hard on getting other big recruits and players there. The future of UC is looking very bright. I want everyone to know that."

Cincinnati (9-0, 5-0 American Athletic Conference) will look to stay unbeaten Friday night at South Florida (2-7, 1-4). Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN2.
