LBJ's Sedrick Alexander needs more yards than thought to set AISD rushing record

Although LBJ running back Sedrick Alexander could still set one of the Austin school district’s most coveted records, the chase for the district’s all-time rushing mark could last longer than expected.

Last week, the American-Statesman reported that Alexander moved within 732 yards of the school district’s all-time rushing record held by Reagan’s Mulbah Car. That number was based off several websites that track the state’s historical statistical leaders.

However, after researching media reports and consulting school sources, the Statesman determined that Car finished his career at Reagan with 4,836 yards rushing. Alexander currently has 3,925 career yards rushing based on stats submitted by LBJ coaches to MaxPreps, which leaves him 911 yards behind Car for the Austin school district’s all-time rushing record.

So far this season, Alexander has averaged 169 yards rushing each contest. At that rate, Alexander would need a little more than five games to break Car’s record. The Jags (3-2, 2-0 District 12-5A DII) have five more regular-season games before beginning what they hope is another long playoff run. LBJ has played in 11 playoff games over the past two seasons while competing in Class 4A Division I but moved up a class during the UIL’s biennial realignment in February.

Alexander, a 5-foot-8, 190-pound senior pledged to Vanderbilt, has played in 30 games during his varsity career, including one game as a freshmen. After his team dispatched McCallum 68-14 last week, Alexander told the American-Statesman that setting the record would “mean something great for our community.”

“It would mean something great for the LBJ family, and it would mean something great to me and my family as well,” he said. “It would be something that we could hold on to for a long time. I’m just happy to be in the position that I’m in. LBJ has taken me in, and I’ve been doing great things here. I’m proud and I’m blessed.”

Car, who fled war-ravaged Liberia in West Africa as a 5-year-old, broke the record previously held by Crockett’s Justin Miller in the eighth game of the 2015 season against McCallum. He added to his record by rushing for 514 yards over the final three games of the 2015 season, including 118 yards in a first-round playoff loss to Georgetown.

Car is also thought to hold the Austin school district’s all-time record for rushing touchdowns with 63. The Austin school district does not archive its athletic records, so such records are determined by researching school records and media reports.

Alexander has 50 career rushing touchdowns, including five this season. He would need 13 more touchdowns this season to surpass the touchdown mark set by Car.
