LCC's Japanese garden, MSU horticulture and children's gardens give off serene summer vibes

The campuses of Michigan State University and Lansing Community College offer beautiful gardens perfect for relaxation, exploration, nature and art. And the best part is, they are free — except for parking.

Shigematsu Memorial Garden at LCC was created in 2006 as a tribute to the late Megumi Shigematsu, a supporter of the college's programs. The garden features a koi pond, lanterns, a bridge and a moon-viewing deck built over a portion of the pond. The garden is a perfect place to take a peaceful walk or rest on a bench while soaking up the beauty.

The MSU Horticulture Gardens offer guests 14 acres to explore endless arrays of colors from plants and flowers. There are sculptures and plenty of areas for relaxation as well.

Adjacent to the horticulture gardens is the Michigan 4-H Children's Garden. In addition to the butterflies, flowers and plants throughout the garden, there is plenty to keep kids occupied including a sand box, small stick huts, a train playhouse and a pond.

If your looking for a relaxing place to read a book or an inexpensive day out with the family, check out one of these gardens.

The Shigematsu Memorial Garden is located at 598 N. Capitol Ave. in Lansing. The MSU Horticulture Gardens and the Michigan 4-H Children's Garden are located in the same area with access from the parking lot at 1066 Bogue St. in East Lansing.
