Lady Chaps sweep SEU in conference doubleheader

Ally Oyanguren unloaded a grand slam in the second inning and Maxine Valdez pitched a four-hit shutout as No. 11 Lubbock Christian University beat St. Edward's 4-0 Saturday to complete a Lone Star Conference softball doubleheader sweep at Maner Park.

LCU (29-8, 19-7) loaded the bases with a leadoff double by Skylar Herrera and infield hits by Veronica Owens and Kamryn Gibbs. Oyanguren's slam was her second homer of the season and came off Cadie Belle (9-4), who allowed only two more hits the rest of the way in a complete game.

Valdez (12-2) walked one and struck out five.

LCU won the first game 7-1 as Kasey Flores hit a three-run homer in a four-run first inning and Taylor Franco tossed a complete game with nine strikeouts. Flores' home run was her 14th, and she finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored.

Franco (11-6) yielded seven hits and no walks.

St. Edward's (18-13, 12-10) will try to avoid a sweep in the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Hilltoppers had won six games in a row before Saturday.

LCU baseball

Kade Bragg threw a one-hitter and No. 3 Angelo State shut out Lubbock Christian University 5-0 Saturday in the opener of a Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Hays Field.

Bragg (8-0), a junior lefthander from Ennis, walked one and struck out eight. Eduardo Acosta had the only hit off him, a single in the first inning.

The Rams broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the fourth inning. Kamden Kelton walked and scored on an error, Tyler Boggs delivered an RBI single and Reese Johnson an RBI double.

Angelo State won the second game 20-6, getting three RBI apiece from Jacob Guerrero, Thomas Cain and Conagher Sands and two each from Kelton and Johnson. The Rams piled up 20 hits without a home run.

LCU (16-12, 15-12) and Angelo State (29-4, 27-4) complete the series with a game at 1 p.m. Sunday with the Rams looking for a sweep.

In Friday night's opener, Jordan Williams' tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the 11th inning lifted Angelo State to a 14-13 victory.

Angelo State made up a 12-4 deficit after the sixth inning. The Rams scored four runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Tripp Clark and a three-run homer from Weston Valasek.

After LCU's Brevin McCool lifted a sacrifice fly in the seventh, Angelo State narrowed the gap to 13-12 in the eighth when Austin Beck doubled and scored on a groundout, Clark homered and Kelton delivered a two-run single.

Beck's leadoff homer in the ninth tied it 13-13.

While Angelo was rallying, Rams reliever Scott Ellis (4-2) struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings of scoreless, two-hit relief.

McCool drove in six runs for LCU with his fourth homer of the season, a pair of two-run singles and the sacrifice fly. Jarred Gibson had a two-run homer and a two-run single. McCool, Gibson and Acosta finished with three hits apiece.

Aydan Alger, the first of five LCU pitchers, went 6 1/3 innings and was charged with eight runs on nine hits. Tyler Manyo (0-1) pitched the last two innings.
