LCU hosts Arlington Baptist in home opener

The Lubbock Christian University men's basketball team will play its home opener Monday night when the 16th-ranked Chaparrals host Arlington Baptist at the Rip Griffin Center.

LCU (1-2) and Arlington Baptist (0-4) tip off at 6 p.m. It's the Chaps' only non-conference home game and their last before they start Lone Star Conference play with home games Dec. 1 against Oklahoma Christian and Dec. 3 against Arkansas-Fort Smith.

The Chaps are coming off a 66-57 road loss Saturday at No. 12 Southern Nazarene.

Junior forward Rowan Mackenzie averages 20.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game for LCU. Junior guard Najeeb Muhammad and senior forward Kurt Wegscheider are averaging 9.3 and 9.0 points per game, respectively.

Arlington Baptist is coached by former Texas Tech player Bubba Jennings. The Patriots are coming off losses to two of LCU's conference rivals, St. Edward's on Tuesday and Angelo State on Saturday. Their top player so far has been Da'Vione Stafford, who averages 16 points and six rebounds per game.

LCU women's basketball

Lubbock Christian University and Southwestern Oklahoma State square off Monday in a battle of tradition-rich programs.

LCU (2-2) and Southwestern Oklahoma State (0-3) tip off at 5:30 p.m. in Weatherford, Oklahoma. LCU beat SWOSU for the championship of the Division II NCAA Tournament in 2019 and downed the Bulldogs again the following November in Lubbock.

SWOSU was 29-5 last season, winning the Great American Conference regular-season and tournament titles. The year before, the Bulldogs were 18-4 and lost to the Lady Chaps in the second round of the D-II NCAA Tournament.

LCU is coming off eight days without a game after winning twice in the Carpet Tech Classic at the Rip Griffin Center, against Colorado Christian and Colorado State-Pueblo.

Sophomore forward Grace Foster leads the Lady Chaps with averages of 21.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Junior guards Maci Maddox and Aubrey Robertson average 12.3 and 12.0 points, respectively.
