LCU, UT Tyler square off in regional final

The Lubbock Christian University women's basketball team will try to advance to the Elite Eight of the Division II NCAA Tournament for the fifth time when the Lady Chaps meet UT Tyler on Monday night in the South Central Regional final.

LCU (24-10) and UT Tyler (26-7) tip off at 7 p.m. at the Junell Center in San Angelo.

LCU was the No. 7 seed and UT Tyler the No. 5 seed in the eight-team regional. The Lady Chaps upset No. 2 seed Texas Woman's in the first round, and the Patriots knocked off No. 1 seed Angelo State in the semifinals.

LCU and UT Tyler faced each other in one Lone Star Conference game this season with UT Tyler winning at home 69-57 on Jan. 19.

Grace Foster leads LCU with averages of 16.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. She was named player of the year in the conference and the most outstanding player in the two-conference South Central Region.

The Patriots are led by Destini Whitehead and Tina Machalova, who average 12.6 and 12.2 points per game, respectively.

SAN ANTONIO — Jake Mares and Jacob King each had three hits and four runs batted in as St. Mary's outslugged Lubbock Christian University 15-11 Sunday to earn a split of a four-game Lone Star Conference series.

Carson Ogilvie and Nate Van Maanen had three hits apiece for LCU (15-9, 15-9).

On Saturday, Van Maanen and Brevin McCool homered and drove in three runs apiece as LCU beat St. Mary's 12-3 to split a doubleheader. Van Maanen had a two-run homer and a bases-loaded walk. McCool capped a four-run fifth inning with a three-run homer that made the score 7-3.

Chris Shull finished 3 for 5 with two runs batted in and scored twice.

St. Mary's won Saturday's first game 7-4 with Clay Bradford (3-1) allowing three hits over six innings and Ryan McGowen driving in three runs. Bradford gave up a three-run homer to Van Maanen and a solo shot to Jarred Gibson that gave the Chaparrals a 4-2 lead.

LCU run-ruled St. Mary's 12-0 in seven innings in the series opener. Aydan Alger (3-1) threw a two-hitter, Gibson drove in three runs and Eduardo Acosta and Van Maanen had three hits apiece.

KINGSVILLE — Berkeley Quinn, Tiarra Delrosario and Hope Banales had two hits apiece at the top of the order and combined to score four runs, leading Lubbock Christain University to a 6-4 victory Sunday in a Lone Star Conference series finale at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

LCU starting pitcher Ashlinn Hamilton (4-1) allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings, and Maxine Valdez pitched a three-up, three-down seventh inning for her second save.

On Saturday, Valdez allowed three hits and Kamryn Gibbs drove in four runs with a homer and a double as the Lady Chaps run-ruled A&M-Kingsville 10-0 in five innings, earning a doubleheader split.

Riley Flores went 3 for 3 with three runs batted in for LCU.

Texas A&M-Kingsville won the opener 6-4. Beth Montes (6-2) threw five innings of scoreless one-hit relief while the Javelinas rallied from a 4-3 deficit. Jory Cervantes broke a 4-4 tie with a run-scoring single in the fourth, and Natalie Rodriguez singled home a run in the fifth.
