Leader of New York State Senate calls on Cuomo to resign

Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Democratic leader of the New York State Senate, said on Sunday that for the "good of the state," Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) should resign.

Three former aides to Cuomo have come forward in recent days and accused him of sexual harassment, and Stewart-Cousins said lawmakers must be able to "govern without daily distraction." While New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D) has not called on Cuomo to resign, he did say on Sunday that he questioned "the governor's ability to continue to lead the state."

Cuomo has responded, saying he is "not going to resign because of allegations," as that would be "anti-democratic" and a violation of the Constitution's due process clause. New York Attorney General Letitia James is overseeing an investigation into the accusations, and Cuomo asked New Yorkers to not jump to conclusions and wait for the inquiry to be completed.
