League of Women Voters' to host panel on Indiana reproductive health laws

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. − A panel regarding Indiana's new reproductive health laws will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. on March 22 at the Crawfordsville District Public Library, 205 S. Washington.

The overturning of Roe v. Wade in the summer of 2022 is bringing about major changes to Indiana's healthcare system and in turn, the state's economy.

"Whatever an individual thinks about the Dobbs decision, it is now the law of the land," a press release about the panel said. "No matter where one falls on the political or religious spectrum, the Dobbs decision’s effects will touch each one of us whether we are of child-bearing age or not.  All community members are invited to learn more about what this ruling is and how it stands to affect reproductive health care in Indiana and our state’s future wellbeing."

Next Wednesday, a group of panelists will gather to discuss these issues from their professional perspectives, the release states. The public is invited to attend.

Panelists are Dr. Joyce Burnette, professor of Economics at Wabash College, Adam Burtner, vice president of Government Affairs of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce and Dr. Caroline Rouse, maternal-fetal specialist at University Hospital in Indianapolis.

Each panelist will describe how the Dobbs decision and its Indiana counterpart, Senate Bill 1, will impact their professional field and how the Supreme Court’s decision may be felt in Indiana in years to come.

Senate Bill 1, outlaws abortion in most cases, was passed by the Indiana General Assembly six weeks after the Dobbs. v. Jackson decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. Indiana's law is currently being challenged in court.

After the panel, audience members will be invited to ask questions. Also in attendance will be Crawfordsville Mayor Todd D. Barton and nurse practitioner and Wabash College nurse Christine Amidon as the panel moderator.

This event is presented by the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County.

The panel will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Crawfordsville District Public Library in the Donnelley Room.
