The League of Women Voters of Sarasota County, in partnership with Sarasota County public schools, is sponsoring an essay, poster, and video contest, “YVOTE,” for high school students to share their thoughts on the importance of voting.

All students in Sarasota County district schools, including public charter schools, are eligible to enter. Awards of $500, $300, and $200 will be given for first-, second-, and third-place winners in each category. The deadline for submissions is Oct. 8. Winners will be announced on Nov. 1.

“Contest judges will be looking for creative, effective, and inspirational entries that capture issues and personal experiences," said Jill Lewis-Spector, Education Acton Team leader for the League. "We want students to evoke a call to action, where their essays, posters or videos illustrate the importance of using our votes to influence the direction of our democracy. Successful entries will also be nonpartisan, that is without endorsements or criticisms of individual candidates or of political parties.”

For an application and guidelines, contact education@lwvsrq.org with the subject heading: YVOTE contest application and guidelines. The contest is funded by the Gulf Coast Community Foundation.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization with a history of promoting informed voter participation and enhanced citizen engagement.

“This is the first time we are doing this contest,” Lewis-Spector said, “and we are looking forward to receiving many, many great entries from Sarasota’s public high school students.”
