WORCESTER —A water main on West Mountain Street that has been leaking for a month was fixed on Monday, the city confirmed.

"The leak was fixed Aug. 22 by a contractor hired by the condominium association,” city spokesman Robert Burgess said in an email on Tuesday. “The condo association is paying the contractor for fixing the leak.”

The leak started when the city responded July 21 to a Mountainshire Drive residence without water and found a broken water meter valve.

The city could not turn off water service to the building, so it had to shut the water off at the connection of a private water main to a public water main in the street.

That caused the valve to fail on the private water main, sending water into the street and prompting a neighbor to complain.

Also on Monday, the city declared a Stage 1 drought and enacted water-use restrictions, including prohibiting irrigation systems from use between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The city’s reservoirs reached 72% capacity this week, which triggered the Stage 1 water use restrictions, Burgess said.
